Steven Pattison

For my last and final research object, I chose an illustration by Steven Pattison. His illustrations are very colourful and modern and immediately caught my eye. He creates his illustrations by using a variety of different methods with pencils, paint, ink and spray paint. His work is then finished in Photoshop

In the illustration I chose, Steven has drawn some well-known everyday products in bright colours. I have always liked art were products we normally don't think much about is given a different approach. By looking at the products in Steven’s illustration I start to think about all the planning and design that goes into making a product design. And who says that a bottle of washing liquid should look boring? Inspired by Steven’s methods, I really want to try to draw or paint something and then finish them in Photoshop later. It reminds me that you don’t always have to make everything from scratch in Photoshop. Drawing or painting first and then edit the work later will give the colouring a little extra glow and makes it stand out more. Steven’s illustration is full of colours and energy and makes me want to buy an everyday product and make art out of it.

I heart NY

For my fourth research object I chose the I love NY logo. The American graphic designer Milton Glaser is the designer behind the famous logo.  The reason why I chose that logo is because it never stops to amaze me how a very simple design can become so well known. The logo has even become a symbol for the city of New York, one of the most popular cities in the world. One of the things I want to work with as a graphic designer is branding and marketing. To create a simple, but at the same time powerful logo for a company can be very challenging.  That’s mainly because a good logo should only consist of a few elements. The way Milton managed to create a logo by combining the pronoun I, a red heart symbolising love and the letters N and Y (New York) into one of the most famous and powerful logos of our time is very inspirational. Milton Glaser is a great graphic designer who are and will for a long time be a legend when it comes to logo design. And the I love NY logo will probably live on for many, many more years after his death.

Kelly Smith

For my third research object I choose an illustration by Kelly Smith. She is an Australian illustrator with a major in both graphic design and photography. In her work she uses a combination of both pencils and watercolour. Most of her work is fashion related and she has done illustrations for Australian Vogue, Net-A-Porter and recently published a book called Sticker Fashionista.

The illustration I chose includes a pencil drawing and colouring with watercolour. I love the way she makes the people in her drawings look real, almost like a black and white photo. The really inspiring bit about her work is the way she colours her drawing with watercolour. I also find her feminine style and great combination of colour highly creative and inspiring. Even though she only colour some parts of the illustration, the end result is amazing. The grey pencil work and the light colours blend so well together. I like the way she mixes two different materials in one illustration. Since the day I came across her work, she has really been an inspiration to me and I think she will became an even greater inspiration in the future.
